DMCA Policy

Last updated: 2026-05-14

Dissidence respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects users to do the same. We respond to clear, complete notices of alleged copyright infringement that comply with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. § 512) and counter-notices that satisfy the same statute.

Submitting a takedown notice

To file a DMCA takedown notice, send an email to:

dmca@dissidence.net

Your notice must include all of the following — the statute makes each of these elements mandatory:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature (typed full legal name is sufficient).
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work you claim has been infringed.
  3. The exact URL on Dissidence where the infringing material is located. One URL per item.
  4. Your contact information: full legal name, mailing address, phone number, and email.
  5. A statement, made under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  6. A statement that the information in the notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf.

Incomplete notices will be returned with a request for the missing elements and will not be acted on until they are complete.

What we do with valid notices

Once we receive a complete, good-faith notice we will remove or disable access to the identified material expeditiously — typically within a few business days — and notify the user who posted it that we have done so. Repeat offenders' accounts may be terminated at our discretion under § 512(i).

Filing a counter-notice

If your content was removed and you believe in good faith that it was a mistake or misidentification, you can submit a counter-notice to the same email address. It must contain all of the following:

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. Identification of the material that was removed and the URL where it appeared before removal.
  3. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  4. Your full legal name, mailing address, and phone number, plus a statement consenting to the jurisdiction of the federal district court for the judicial district where your address is located (or, if outside the United States, any judicial district in which Dissidence may be found), and a statement that you will accept service of process from the party who submitted the original notice.

If we receive a valid counter-notice we will forward it to the original complainant. Unless they file an action seeking a court order against the user within 10–14 business days, we may restore the material.

Knowingly false claims

Under § 512(f), anyone who knowingly materially misrepresents either (a) that material is infringing, or (b) that material was removed by mistake, may be liable for damages. Don't send takedown notices in bad faith.
